Savoring Summer: Unmissable Events in Leavenworth, Washington

In the heart of Washington state, nestled in the scenic Cascade Mountains, the charming Bavarian-styled village of Leavenworth blooms with vibrant festivities come summertime. Its enchanting alpine setting paired with an impressive lineup of events make it a must-visit summer destination. Here are my top three favorite Leavenworth summer events that combine culture, music, and the great outdoors.

1. Maifest

Leavenworth's Maifest, held annually in mid-May, ushers in the summer season with an authentic Bavarian flair. It's a colorful weekend-long celebration steeped in German traditions and local customs. The town square is transformed into a lively festival ground adorned with floral displays, ribbons, and the traditional Maipole. Parades featuring horse-drawn wagons, traditional Bavarian dance performances, and live German music create a joyous atmosphere. Don't forget to savor authentic German sausages and pretzels, and for the adults, a selection of locally brewed beer.

2. Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration

In June, the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration takes center stage. This four-day event brings together accordion enthusiasts from around the globe. The streets echo with melodic strains from impromptu performances, organized concerts, and even competitive performances that are a treat to witness. Whether you're an accordion aficionado or just enjoy good music, this event offers a unique and heartwarming experience.

3. Art in the Park

For those who appreciate the arts, the summer-long Art in the Park at Front Street Park is a must. Kicking off in late June and running until early October, this outdoor art show exhibits the works of local and regional artists. Stroll through the park, meet the creators, and perhaps take home a unique memento. The showcased art spans a variety of mediums, including paintings, jewelry, pottery, and more.

Leavenworth is not just about events. When in town, take advantage of the outdoor activities that the sunny weather invites. Explore the numerous hiking trails, cool off in the Wenatchee River with a refreshing rafting trip, or simply enjoy a leisurely bike ride around town.

After a day packed with festivities and adventures, wind down at one of Leavenworth's local wineries or breweries. The town is part of the Cascade Farmlands Wine and Craft Beverage Tour, making it a great place to sample some of the Pacific Northwest's best vintages and craft beers.

Summer in Leavenworth, Washington, offers a blend of cultural immersion, artistic exploration, and outdoor adventure. Its calendar of events showcases the town's vibrant community spirit and its Bavarian heart. So, whether you're a returning visitor or planning your first trip, immerse yourself in the summer magic that Leavenworth lovingly unfolds.

Discovering Hidden Treasures: The Secret Striped Peak Trail Near Port Angeles

Hidden amidst the well-trodden trails of the Olympic Peninsula is a gem that even locals might consider off-the-beaten-path: the Striped Peak Trail. This lesser-known hike, nestled just west of Port Angeles, Washington, serves as a clandestine gateway into the heart of the Pacific Northwest's (PNW) enchanting wilderness.

Starting from the Salt Creek Recreation Area, the Striped Peak Trail immediately entices with its lush, moss-draped forests and the chorus of local birds echoing through the canopy. The route, a gentle yet steady ascent, winds through towering stands of Douglas fir, hemlock, and cedar. As you hike, keep an eye out for the occasional deer wandering silently through the underbrush.

About halfway through the journey, a marked side trail presents an opportunity to visit an old WWII-era bunker, a historic relic that adds a touch of mystery to this otherwise nature-focused trek.

Upon reaching Striped Peak's summit, hikers are rewarded with a stunning panorama of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with Canada visible across the glistening waters. On clear days, the vista extends even further to encompass Vancouver Island and the glimmering city of Victoria. This bird's-eye view, best enjoyed with a packed lunch or a flask of hot cocoa, epitomizes the serene beauty and solitude of the PNW.

The journey back down offers more woodland charm, completing a round-trip adventure that many hikers find delightfully restorative. It's a secret slice of wilderness that combines history, biodiversity, and jaw-dropping views, making the Striped Peak Trail a must-visit for any avid explorer looking for something unique in the Port Angeles area.

Whether you're a PNW local or an out-of-town visitor, the Striped Peak Trail presents an unspoiled oasis awaiting discovery. So, lace up your boots, pack your trail snacks, and let the call of the wild lead you to this hidden haven amidst the Olympic Peninsula's enchanting expanse.

Blossoms and Bouquets: A Lavender Love Affair in Sequim, Washington

Lavender fields in sequim, washington

Nestled in the sun-drenched valley of the Dungeness River, Sequim (pronounced "skwim"), Washington, is a quaint little town known as America's Provence. This lavender lover’s paradise boasts some of the most beautifully fragrant fields of purple blooms in the country, leading to its celebrated status as the "Lavender Capital of North America".

Visiting Sequim is like stepping into an Impressionist painting, where rolling lavender fields extend to the horizon, gently caressed by the Pacific breezes. I'm thrilled to share my experience exploring the top three lavender farms in the area, each with its unique charm, adding to the delightful tapestry of Sequim's lavender landscape.

1. Purple Haze Lavender Farm

Our first stop, the Purple Haze Lavender Farm, is an organically-certified wonderland that offers a whimsical introduction to Sequim's lavender legacy. You can wander through the vibrantly hued fields, pluck your own bouquet of lavender, and even taste lavender-infused ice cream! Don't forget to explore their on-site gift shop, where an array of lavender products, from essential oils to culinary treats, offers a tangible piece of this experience to take home.

2. Jardin du Soleil

Next on our journey is Jardin du Soleil, a sustainably-run farm with meticulously maintained fields. The farm is a vision in purple during the peak season, presenting an irresistible opportunity for photography enthusiasts. Their garden labyrinth offers a unique sensory experience, with lavender-scented breezes accompanying your every step. Post your labyrinth adventure, swing by their boutique store, stocked with artisanal lavender soaps, lotions, and their renowned lavender honey.

3. Victor's Lavender

Last but not least is Victor's Lavender, a charming family-owned farm. This farm is unique for its nursery and propagation greenhouse, where visitors can learn about the farm's lavender cultivation process and even purchase plants for their gardens. Victor, the farm's owner, is often available to share stories and provide insights into the enchanting world of lavender farming.

Beyond the delightful exploration of lavender farms, Sequim offers a wealth of additional experiences.

Dungeness Spit

While in the area, don't miss the Dungeness Spit, the longest natural sand spit in the U.S., leading to a historic lighthouse. This wildlife refuge is a haven for bird watchers, and a lovely spot for a beach picnic or a quiet, scenic hike.

Olympic Game Farm

If you're traveling with family, a visit to the Olympic Game Farm is a must. Kids and adults alike will be thrilled to see the resident animals - from bears to bison - in this drive-through wildlife exhibit.

Downtown Sequim

Lastly, take a leisurely stroll around downtown Sequim. This charming town center is dotted with art galleries, boutique shops, and restaurants offering locally-sourced Pacific Northwest fare. Try Alder Wood Bistro for their delicious wood-fired pizzas, and finish off with a cup of locally-roasted coffee at Rainshadow Café.

A visit to Sequim, Washington, is a journey into a world where nature's palette crafts scenes of stunning beauty, and the air is perfumed with the scent of lavender. It's a place that feels a world away, offering an idyllic retreat from the rush of everyday life. As I reflect on my travels, I'm reminded of a line by the poet, Rumi, which beautifully encapsulates my Sequim experience: "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do." In Sequim, it's evident that the town

Our new Olympic Sky Haus is open for booking!

We fell in love with the Olympic Peninsula decades ago. This part of the world is covered in glaciated mountains, surrounded by dense moss-covered rainforests, and outlined by a rugged wind-whipped Pacific coastline to the West and the Salish Sea to the North.

Olympic National Park is the jewel at the heart of the peninsula. The park features at least 16 endemic animal species and 8 endemic plant species.  It also boasts incredible hiking and year round recreational opportunities for adventurers of all levels.

We wanted to find a little home here because we adopted a rescue Alaskan Malamute that does not do well with people or dogs, and we wanted him to have a place where he could run free. We also are obsessed with surfing and hiking out here so it was the ideal place for our little family to build a home.

Building Our Olympic Peninsula Cabin Rental

We originally were looking for a piece of land  but after a few failed real estate attempts we decided to stretch our search options. When we found Olympic Sky Haus we were in awe of the natural beauty of the valley and we loved the proximity to the area’s best hiking.

The little house, though, needed A LOT of work. We spent the past 8 months fixing it up, and we put a lot of love into making the space comfortable and cozy while introducing a host of modern amenities.

The final result is a minimalist retreat that immerses visitors in the Pacific Northwest's grand scenery.

While there are a lot of places to stay on the Olympic Peninsula, not many can offer the combinations of privacy, natural beauty, a modern space, and a hot tub.  Visitors usually have to sacrifice at least one of their requirements when booking an Olympic Peninsula Cabin Rental.

When not in use by us, we decided to offer our cabin as a vacation rental.  We feel it has everything visitors need for a special stay on the peninsula.

Cedar Hot Tub Experience at Leavenworth Little Bear Cabin

Guests have been loving the new cedar hot tub at Leavenworth Little Bear Cabin. I fantasized about owning a cedar hot tub for years and I knew it would be the perfect addition in my natural backyard. After researching companies across Oregon and Washington that specialized in designing cedar hot tubs I decided to get a Snorkel Hot tub out of Seattle. I was fortunate enough to have a couple of very handy friends put the hot tub and plumbing together during freezing fall and winter weather. It was not an easy task, but well worth the effort.

On any visit to Little Bear Cabin I now immediately jump into the hot tub within 5 minutes of my arrival. The scent of the all natural western red cedar makes the hot tub experience truly unique. I have also now added cozy bathrobes for guests to use when making the walk over from the cabin to the hot tub. In fresh snow the cedar hot tub can make you feel like you have been transported to a rustic spa in a far off Nordic country. In summer mornings and evenings you can soak for hours while listening to birds chirping and the trees rustling in the wind. The cedar hot tub includes 4 jets and is set to 103 degrees. It comfortably fits 4 people. I hope you get to come and experience the magic of Plain and Leavenworth, Wa and now also the magic of the new cedar hot tub!

Plain, Washington is NOT plain at all

Leavenworth Little Bear Cabin is nestled in a cute and quiet cabin community in Plain, Washington. This unassuming town is often overshadowed by it’s more famous neighbor Leavenworth, a 25 minute drive from the cabin. Plain, Washington deserves a visit on its own for it’s natural surroundings, world class recreation, and must-visit shops. I have highlighted a few of my favorite stops in this quaint mountain town. In future blog posts I will share more of my favorite hikes, dog-friendly activities and restaurants.

Plain Cellars A small boutique winery that has incredible wine and a beautiful outdoor patio with a mountain backdrop. It is the quintessential setting for wine tasting with friends and family. Being only a 3 minute drive to Leavenworth Little Bear Cabin makes this stop a no-brainer on your vacation. Out of all the many wineries in the area this is hands down my favorite. Bonus - it is dog-friendly!

Plain Hardware Store So much more than a hardware store! The owners have cultivated a gift and clothing store that rivals all boutique stores in downtown Leavenworth. It is always a highlight on a trip to the area. The giftshop in winter showcases sought-after clothing brands for cross-country ski and cold-weather fashion while in the summer you can find some of the best outdoor clothing brands from around the world. The giftshop alone is worth a visit but that’s not all this amazing little store has to offer. The Plain Hardware store also has a coffee shop with delicious brews and baked goods and they open early! It is only a 3 minute drive to the cabin so we always stop here before a big adventure into the nearby mountains.

Enjoying a tasting after a hard days work cross-country skiing down the street

Lake Wenatchee State Park A trip to Plain, Washington is not complete without a stop at the stunning Lake Wenatchee. In all seasons, and all weather, this lake is jaw-droppingly beautiful. In winter ski across the lake or in summer paddle board and swim. I recommend checking out both the North and South end of the park for very different lake views that will both take your breath away. Don’t forget your discovery pass to visit in the summer or a snow parks pass to visit in the winter. These can be purchased at the park as well.

The Wenatchee river runs through Lake Wenatchee State Park creating a winter wonderland scene

Yes the water is THIS crystal clear on a calm day. We recommend a visit to the lake in early morning hours for one of the most peaceful settings imaginable.

Washington State hotsprings

Sandwiched between the Leavenworth Little Bear Cabin and the Skykomish Vida Chalet is an exceptional hotspring and locals favorite. It is also one of Washington’s best kept secrets. Only 10 people are allowed per day and access to the hotsprings requires a .8 mile walk up a steep forest trail. At the end of the trail you get to enjoy a truly unique and truly rustic hotspring experience. For instructions on accessing this special place use the link Scenic Hotsprings

Cross-country skiing at Lake Wenatchee

It’s been a beautiful snowy March here in Plain, Washington. We decided to take advantage of the sunny weather to go cross-country ski at Lake Wenatchee. Lake Wenatchee is a 15 minute drive from Leavenworth Little Bear cabin. To access the trails you need to purchase a 15 dollar snowpark pass which you can get through a self-service box when you park at Lake Wenatchee. There are options to ski at both the north and south end of the Lake. Both sides have trails that run right next to the Lake! We opted for trying the South end on this trip. We rented our skis, boots and poles from the Plain Hardware store for a total of 18 dollars. We were told there should be at least two weeks left of skiing in the Lake Wenatchee area and Plain. To access the Plain cross-country ski trails drive 3 minutes from the cabin to the Plain Hardware store. The trails start directly across the street.
